The number one thing I have noticed doing Metabolic Balance®
This year I started my own Metabolic Balance® journey. It has been an incredibly eye opening experience for so many reasons. I will be going into it further in a future article but in the meantime, I wanted to discuss THE biggest thing I have noticed not only in myself but pretty much all of the clients I have been seeing lately.
Using food as a reward or soother. Now don't get me wrong, food is delicious and I am all for enjoying all types of food but the one thing I have noticed is how many of us have been conditioned from childhood to use food as a comforter and a go to when we need to lift our spirits or reward ourselves. To hit the spot when we are bored at work, or feeling emotional, or having a bad day or having a good day. We often turn to food (and let's face it, never for a bowl of vegetables) to soothe or reward ourselves. The issue of course is food being used as bandaid is not the answer. It won’t hug us, help to ease our mind or process our thoughts and feelings. Mindlessly eating is not going to make us feel better and this conditioning to reward ourselves every time we are bored or uncomfortable adds up and can contribute to health issues down the track. Foggy headedness, lethargy, weight gain, bloating, blood sugar regulation issues. It's a long list. Any of it sound familiar?
I am 100% not immune to this let me tell you. Despite eating really delicious foods on my plan not to mention a lot more of it than I was used to eating prior to Metabolic Balance®, for the first few weeks I would find myself at the fridge staring into the abyss wishing I could just eat a whole cake. Not a piece of cake. A whole cake…..full of sugar and cream. I know, who would have thought a naturopath could be so unruly :P
The thing is most of my clients are no different. Some of the feedback I have received is how so many of them had no idea how much snacking they were doing during the day and how any type of fun or reward meant treating themselves with sugar or an abundance and ongoing supply of “healthy treats”. They spoke about how half the time they barely even tasted the food they ate. They would just eat out of boredom or because they craved something sweet after their meal.
So interesting and yet very unsurprising when you unpack and explore what sugar actually does to us when we eat it. There is the emotional component of course and the conditioning and associations we form with eating sugar and feeling soothed but there is also the biochemical factors that literally keep us addicted to the sweet stuff. It's designed to keep us coming back for more. Its cheeky and short lived and requires a constant fix. It's not our fault, yet there is a lot we can do to reset ourselves and break these habits.
