Getting Personal: A Peek into the Life of the Naturopath Behind Carolyn Allen Health

As a naturopath it’s part of my job to get to know my clients very very well. So I thought it’s only fair I let you know a little more about me. So here is a little reintroduction for those of you who have worked with me or an introduction if this is the first time you’re coming across me.

As the name of my business and website suggests, I’m Carolyn. I’m a clinical naturopath, a yoga teacher, a Metabolic Balance® practitioner and mum to a darling little sweet 5 year old human. I have a wonderful, supportive and very good human to love. His name is Jon and we’ve been together for almost 13 years.

I grew up in Melbourne and now live in sunny Queensland which is quite an odd choice for someone who LOVES Melbourne and doesn’t like the heat or sun (the things we do for love).

I love people but hate crowds. I love getting to know people and hate small talk which is why being a naturopath is my dream job. No small talk when you’re a naturopath. I love to help people. I love to learn and to share what I learn with others.

I’ve always been really into health and wellness and I attribute this to my early start as a swimmer with aspirations of making it to the Olympics. I never did make it very far in swimming but it did set me up with a love of movement, taught me how good exercise can make you feel and gave me the kind of discipline that goes hand in hand with daily swim training and weekend competitions.

My favourite things to do are all very introverted activities like being in nature, reading, listening to podcasts and audiobooks, walks and practicing yoga…and travel. I love to travel and have travelled all over the world. I love to explore new places. I also love being at home and routine so I’m always happy to come back to reality. I love our house. It’s a 1970’s architecturally designed home that is a mix between LA bungalow, a Spanish villa and madmen. It’s fun and quirky and has really interesting features you just don’t see a lot of.

I love to eat. I love coffee a lot and healthy food which I enjoy cooking myself. I also love mac and cheese and lasagne and delicious buttery popcorn. I’m a dessert person but can’t bake. Metabolic Balance has really helped me kick my sugar addiction and when I do have chocolate I have 95% dark chocolate and enjoy every bit of it.

I don’t drink alcohol anymore and feel 1000x better for it. My father was an alcoholic who died in his 40’s from the disease so I’m always conscious about my relationship with booze. He was an example of trauma having its way with a person and the importance of working through our issues with a professional. The topic of trauma and addiction is such tricky topic to cover, and one I’m not qualified to discuss so I won’t but I’m very interested in learning more about it. Maybe one day I’ll do further study but now is not the time. I do however recommend reading the book ‘The body keeps the score’ if you are interested in trauma and the impact it has on us.

My favourite herb is passionflower. I love how it makes me feel. I call it a hug in a bottle and it’s one I regularly prescribe in clinic. Who doesn’t need a hug.

I love fashion and spend a lot of time playing dress ups with my clothes. I have always been this way. I tend to keep a lot of my clothes and realised the other day I have quite a few pieces I have had for over 15 years now. It pays to buy quality and choose what you like rather than follow trends like a sheep. Bah.

I spend 30mins running or doing a workout everyday to help keep my mental health in check. I practice yoga every day and meditate twice a day. I realise this sounds like a lot but it’s not really I promise. I make time for it and choose to prioritise it but it’s not always easy. It also helps I do most things from home so don’t have to travel anywhere. I also only have one child and I’m a very early morning person so I can get most of it done by 7am. I’m a jump out of bed excited to start the day kind of person which can be very annoying (ask Jon).

I can’t sleep on a Sunday night. It’s like I’m too excited for the week ahead which I know makes me sound weird. I remember being like this in primary school.

I’ve been told I’m too much. I used to feel ashamed of this. But now I realise it’s a good thing. I am passionate and excited so if I’m too much for you, thats ok. It has nothing to do with me. I’m happy to be around the people who find my too muchness joyful and inspiring. You can’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Growth is being ok with this. One of the big lessons I learnt in my 20’s and early 30’s.

I’ve practiced yoga for 23 years which is such a funny thing to acknowledge given I only feel 23. I started as a way of calming my mind and fell in love with the practice. It was in the late 1990’s and I have loved it deeply ever since. I did my teacher training in 2013 which is wild. 10 years and how much I have changed since then.

I have two gorgeous dogs who bring me so much joy! They are like cuddly teddybears and they actually do hug us. I love them dearly.

Being a naturopath is a dream come true and I love holding space and guiding my lovely clients on their health journey. I work all week and I am happy to open up spots on Sundays if you need. You can book a consult HERE or you can email me hello@carolynallenhealth.com

If you have any questions at all I encourage you to book in for a discovery call or email me. I reply to everything.
