Why Stabilising Blood Sugar Levels is Essential for Everyone and How Metabolic Balance® Can Help
Stabalising blood sugar levels is not just an issue for diabetics. In fact blood sugar spikes are bad for us all. Flattening these spikes is what helps us to transform our health and is one of the key things Metabolic Balance® helps us to do. Let's take a closer look at what this actually means.
Firstly, let's start with the main players in this picture, glucose and insulin. Glucose is the main type of sugar we get from the foods we eat. It enters our bloodstream and is what the cells in our body use for energy. Insulin is a hormone that has the role of opening the doors to our cells to allow glucose to enter so it can be used as energy. The issue arises when we disrupt this balance and our insulin levels are forced to increase in order to keep up with the amount of glucose entering our bloodstream. We need glucose, that's a fact. But nature intended for us to have it in a very specific way. In the form of perfectly packaged plants, where there is always the combination of sugar/starch AND fibre. Why? Because fibre helps to slow down the body’s absorption of glucose and therefore helps to keep the balance and prevent blood sugar spikes. These blood sugar spikes are what trigger insulin to increase. If this happens often enough and we can find ourselves with some pretty significant health issues.
So what causes these spikes?
Well unfortunately it’s the two things that plague us most in this modern world we find ourselves in; diet and stress. Highly processed foods, foods with too much sugar and carbohydrates. Not enough vegetables and fruit. You get the picture. And then there is the role of stress. Stress causes our body to release more hormones to step in and help resolve this fight or flight response. So in comes cortisol and adrenaline which are there to help. However these hormones actually add to the problem by making it harder for insulin to do its job properly. So when we’re regularly under stress and experiencing blood sugar spikes from our diet, insulin, which is already being produced in excess, finds it very hard to keep up, becoming even more overworked and resulting in insulin resistance.
So what's the problem with too much insulin being released?
When we enter the zone of insulin resistance, the body doesn’t respond normally to insulin meaning, it stops letting the glucose in to do its job. This glucose isn’t able to enter the cells to be used as energy so it just floats around building up in our blood. This is what leads to things like prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. When our glucose levels are out of whack, it sends our hormones into a tailspin, and we tend to put on weight which we can't seem to lose, we crave more food, more carbs, more sugar. Basically it messes everything up.
